Hubs’ 3-point barrage not enough to upend Knights

MAPLE PARK — It was a three-point shoot out Thursday evening as the Hubs tried their best to hold on to a lead created by Rochelle gunslingers Luke Manning and newly returned Grant Prusator.

The two put up big numbers to give the Hubs an early lead over rival Kaneland, but it wasn’t enough to stay on top in the fourth quarter as the Knights defeated Rochelle 65-62 despite trailing for the better half of three quarters.

“As things got tough in the second half we really had trouble getting looks,” Rochelle head coach Tim Thompson said after Thursday night’s game.

Kaneland put points on the scoreboard first, but the first quarter belonged to the Hubs, who jumped out to a 19-14 lead, much thanks to Manning who hit three times behind the three-point line in the first quarter alone.

Up 10-6 with 4:00 left in the first quarter, Prusator checked into the game for the first time since he injured his knee in the LaSalle-Peru Tournament at the beginning of the season. With the Knight’s adjusting their defense to key more on Prusator, Manning saw the opportunity to add six more points to the scoreboard, while sophomore guard Aaron Mehrings got into the act and knocked down his own trifecta.
