Project to help students catch up, grow

Posted: Friday, Dec 28th, 2012

ROCHELLE — After months of waiting for the approval of a $2.1 million federal grant, Rochelle Elementary School District 231, along with its co-applicant, the Flagg-Rochelle Park District and 33 community partners, will soon launch the “HUB Project,” a tenacious afterschool program that will offer academic help and interactive learning to many Rochelle youths.

This 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program Grant will be used to supplement the program for its first five years by issuing $435,669 in federal aid per year and will support the academic needs, enrichment and family programming of 350 Rochelle students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Unlike many other types of afterschool programs, “HUB,” or “Helping Us Build a Smarter, Stronger and Healthier Community Project,” is designed to extend learning in a fun and interactive way for primarily academically “at risk” students that aren’t meeting Illinois Learning Standards. This program will be implemented beginning Jan. 14 and will continue throughout the calendar year, including six weeks in summer.
