DEKALB — The Rochelle Township High School boys varsity basketball team had spurts of effective offensive play, but it was not enough to overcome a strong Moline team which defeated the Hubs 57-64 in Rochelle’s second game of the Chuck Dayton Holiday Basketball Tournament.

The Hubs started the first quarter finding open shots, but struggled to knock them down and fell behind quickly 4-0. With 6:30 in the quarter, sophomore Connor Wallace, who provided Rochelle’s offensive spark of the first half, took one step in front of the arc and drained a long two-pointer to finally put Rochelle on the board. Moline returned fire making the score 6-2, but senior Kevin Stevens converted his post move into a three-point play drawing the foul and making his free throw to pull Rochelle to within one point 6-5.

That was as close as the Hubs would get the rest of the night, as Moline’s Drew Owens, who led the Maroons in scoring, started heating up. He hitting a three-pointer and forced a turnover that led to another score to pull the Maroons ahead of the Hubs 12-5. Wallace connected for another basket, but Owens scored two quick baskets to push Moline ahead 20-7 and force Rochelle to use its first time out of the game.

Moline scored again after the time out, but with 2:18 left Wallace scored in the lane and was fouled. He missed his free throw but followed his shot, grabbed the rebound and earned another trip to the line after drawing the foul. This time he made both shot, giving Rochelle the four-point swing.
