ROCHELLE — Rochelle Township High School board members held a “Truth and Taxation” public hearing session on Monday night before the regular monthly scheduled board meeting.
Similar to last year, the district’s estimated assessed valuation (EAV) increased by $14 million. Of that amount, the school board is expecting to receive closer to a $3 or $4 million increase after the tax appeal process. According to superintendent Jamie Craven, this means that the board will see closer to a 3 percent increase, instead of the 6 percent increase currently listed on paper.
“When the new EAV goes out, our overall value has increased, but property owners (mostly in the Dement Township) can appeal the evaluation and some of the $14 million is lost. Last year, there was a projected $45 million increase, but after appeals, only $14 million was left. We knew that wasn’t a real number,” said Craven.
