AURORA — W.W. “Jeff” Jaffke, 89, of Rochelle, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Rochelle Community Hospital. Jeff was born Nov. 22, 1923 in Chicago, to Lillian and Fredrick Jaffke, Sr. His family moved to May Street in Aurora, five years later.
Jeff was a 1942 graduate of West Aurora High School. He entered the Army Air Corps in June of 1943, serving as a tail gunner on a B-17, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. On his 13th mission, his plane was shot down near Poland and he was captured by the German army and interned in a POW camp. Jeff’s camp was liberated by General George S. Patton in June of 1945. He was awarded two Purple Heart medals and an Air medal.
On June 11, 1949, Jeff married Arlene Meyers. Jeff and Arlene made a career in the cemetery industry for many years until he retired. Jeff’s family meant everything to him. He also loved camping, fishing, traveling, the White Sox and “Da Bears.” He was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Arlene; his children, Lauren (John Suter), Bryan (Emily) and Leigh (Kris Weiss); his sister, Marilyn Lawrence, his sister-in-law, Donna Jaffke; as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by his brothers, Owen and Fred, Jr. and a brother-in-law, T. Robert Lawrence.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30 at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Place, Aurora. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the funeral home. Rev. Juancho Campanano will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park.
Memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church, Mooseheart’s New School Fund or to the Salvation Army.
