ROCHELLE — Although it’s not difficult to empty car trash into any of the numerous gas station waste bins in the area, some litterbugs cannot resist the temptations of throwing garbage out their windows.

Thankfully for the City of Rochelle, 22 employees and family members of workers at the Illinois River Energy, LLC took matters into their own hands on Friday when they picked up garbage alongside a two-mile stretch on IL Route 251.

Unlike some of the company’s other charitable efforts, this particular event called for a more “dressed down” look, as the volunteers walked alongside the highway, wore safety reflective vests and used a stick-like utensil to grab garbage for their individual waste bags. The ethanol plant employees participate in this highway cleanup event four times a year.
