The Rochelle American Legion and VFW Post #3878 recently repainted the war cannon located at Memorial Park. Men from both service groups decided to take on the project after the Flagg-Rochelle Park District reconstructed a memorial arch at the park. (Photo submitted)

ROCHELLE—The Rochelle VFW Post #3878 and American Legion joined forces to repaint the cannon at Memorial Park recently.

“The park district had just installed a new arch and the two groups wanted to help the community and get things cleaned up,” Dave Norris, VFW member, said.

A group of eight men spent three days scraping paint off the cannon and stripping it to metal in some areas before they could repaint. Areas of the cannon’s paint had been scratched with graffiti and just applying another coat of paint would not cover the damage.
