Former RTHS pitcher returns to the dugout to manage the Hubs

ROCHELLE — Nick Reineck remembers winning a lot of baseball games while wearing a Hubs jersey. Not his sophomore year, though.

“I decided to do track instead,” said Reineck, who is now a history teacher at RTHS. “That was the season the baseball team made it to the sectional championship game.”

Maybe he’ll be part of the team the next time the Hubs make it that far.

Earlier this week, Reineck was named the new varsity baseball coach at RTHS. In order for him to experience a postseason run like the one he watched from the bleachers in his track spikes, he’ll have to turn around a program that has lost 59 of its last 73 games.

“I‘ve been missing baseball,” said Reineck, who went on to pitch at Knox College after graduating from RTHS in 2002. “It’s a lot of fun to be around. Growing up, it always seemed like this was the game you’d play in the backyard with your friends during the summer. There’s always been a different kind of camaraderie with it.”

Reineck may be young, but he isn’t inexperienced from a coaching standpoint. For the past four years, he has served as an assistant coach on Rochelle’s football and basketball teams.

During the basketball team’s surprise run to the sectional championship game in 2009, head coach Russ Zick frequently commended Reineck for his assistance formulating gameplans.

“This is a great opportunity for him to try and be the main guy,” Zick said. “He puts a premium on teaching during practice. That’s something that I’m sure will carry over to baseball. He’ll work hard at it just like he does everything else.”

Reineck credits Zick and RTHS football coach Kevin Crandall for teaching him how to effectively run a program.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of two great programs. Being a player under those two guys and then getting to coach with them and see how they ran things has been great,” Reineck said.
