ROCHELLE —Visitors to the Railfan railroad park in Rochelle have noticed some changes recently. These improvements are aimed at visually enhancing the experience of those who visit. When visitors arrive at the train park, in front of the gift shop are 50 bricks that have been put in place surrounding the landscaping. These bricks were hand-painted by area school students. The students were given a blank, white brick and were asked to design and paint them to resemble railcars, engines or cabooses.

The idea of involving students to help decorate the bricks was thought of by Dena McCoy, owner of Serenity Landscaping and Lawn Care. Serenity is contracted to maintain the landscaping with the railroad park, as well as several other city locations such as the Flagg Township and Filling Station Museums. McCoy wanted to involve the students in some way, helping to bring a sense of ownership and pride among the younger crowd.

“I just want these kids to claim this town and be part of it,” says McCoy of involving students in the process.
