Honoring a firefighter

Posted: Monday, Jun 30th, 2014

Family and friends, along with many community members and fellow firefighters and emergency responders gathered to honor fallen firefighter Kenneth Wendt on Friday morning. Ogle-Lee Fire Protection District Chaplain Judy Williams spoke of the memorial service and offered a prayer, Rochelle Fire Chief Brian Johnson and firefighter/paramedic Rob Workman spoke of Wendt, with Workman sharing the events of that tragic fire back on Dec. 27, 1950. Wendt’s grandson, Ken Wendt, went on to thank all who attended the day’s tribute, offering one of the moments that stood out from that day as “the heroic efforts of the 100 fire department personnel on the scene to control the fire.” Wendt and son Kaden presented Rodney Wendt, Kenneth’s only son, an original firefighter’s helmet with Kenneth’s number on it. Pictured at left are Stephanie Wendt, Ken’s wife, daughter Madelyn, son Kaden, Ken’s dad Rodney (son of Kenneth Wendt), Ken’s mom Norene and Ken Wendt, who was named after his grandfather.
