DEKALB — On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Rochelle Township High School students Tatum Wagner, Lauren Murphy and Mae Pemberton will be swimming in the IHSA Swimming Sectionals as representatives of the high school.

All three girls swim for the Rochelle Rays, the Flagg-Rochelle Community Park District’s summer swim club, but for the past few weeks, the girls have been in the water at the Kiswaukee YMCA practicing with the DeKalb County Swim Team. This means the girls have had to get themselves to practice several times a week and compete in a YMCA sanctioned swim meet.

Mae Pemberton, who has taken a six-year hiatus from competitive swimming, helps out with the Hub Project after school, but she has her swim suit and goggles in her bag, ready for practice as soon as her busy afternoon is over. When asked what made her decide to get back in to swimming, she simply replied, “Why not?”

Pemberton, Murphy and Wagner are all good friends, both during the week at school and on the weekends at church.
