ON any given day of the week, Rochelle resident Andy Reiss can be seen around town, wielding his top-of-the-line “Garrett” metal detector in neighborhoods in search of the next lost treasure he can retrieve from the earth.
Reiss, who has lived in Rochelle for the past nine years and has been an avid detector for about three, searches for long-lost items between 15 to 20 hours per week in his spare time from his full-time job at Northern Illinois University.
“It’s important to have a hobby,” he said. “I like the idea of being able to restore something old. Things continue to deteriorate unless they are found.”
