BEFORE George Washington was the first president of the United States, he was a young Army colonel with a married girlfriend, that is, until he found his match in Martha Custis.

In the Thursday afternoon play at Hickory Grove, “The Courtship of George and Martha,” local actors from the Vince Carney Community Theatre portrayed the unlikely romance between George and his future wife and first lady, Martha. The play was arranged by the Rochelle Women’s Club and took place on Thursday afternoon.

“February is ‘President’s Month,’ so our club highlights one president. I was looking for new material and stumbled upon the story of how George met Martha. The play is an interpretation as to what might have happened when they met,” said Rochelle Women’s Club member, Vince Carney thespian and play scriptwriter and director, Diane Jenner.
