ROCHELLE — Dr. Edward Bruce “Doc” Johnson, 69, Rochelle, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in Door County, Wis., while on a fishing trip.
He was born on June 24, 1941 in Rockford to Edward P. and Gwen (Belanger) Johnson.
He graduated from Northland College in Ashland, Wis., and then graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in South Chicago.
Bruce married Marilyn Jane Child on June 5, 1965 in Ashland. He served as an optometrist in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In 1975, he started his optometry business in Rochelle.
Memberships include VFW Post 3878, Rochelle Moose, Rochelle Wildlife Conservation Club, St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Illinois Optometric Association.
He was an avid sportsman and outdoors man.
Preceding him in death was his father on May 30, 2004 and his mother on Aug. 29, 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, of Rochelle; daughter, Lori (Don) Smith of Byron; son, Jason (Cheryl Russell) Johnson of Rochelle; grandchildren, Tristan C. Smith and Kara E. Smith; and brother, Dr. William P. Johnson of Tucson, Ariz.
Visitation will be at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. Sixth St., Rochelle, on Sunday, July 25 from 2-5 p.m.
Family funeral services will be held on Monday.
Memorials may be made to Rochelle Wildlife Conservation Club. Burial will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Rochelle.
